Frequently Asked Questions

The app stays in landscape. Is that a bug?

No β€” the app is designed for landscape so you always have the whole rink in view. If you'd like portrait on the home screen, open Ice Appearance from the grid menu in the top-left and turn off Lock to Landscape.

How do I sync my plays across my iPads?

Make sure each iPad is signed in to the same Apple ID with iCloud turned on. The app syncs your plays, teams, rosters, lineups, folders, tags, sequences, and practice plans automatically through your private iCloud β€” no account setup is needed inside the app. To move everything to a new iPad right away, you can also use Backup & Restore from the grid menu.

I lost my plays after reinstalling the app. Can I recover them?

If iCloud sync was on before you deleted the app, your plays are still in your iCloud account and will come back after you reinstall. If iCloud was off and you didn't export a backup, the data was stored only on that iPad and can't be recovered.

How do I import players from a spreadsheet?

Open Organize β†’ Teams from the grid menu, select your team, and tap Import from CSV…. Your file needs columns for Name, Number, and Position. You can make one in Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets and save it to Files.

How do I start from a ready-made play or formation?

Tap the book icon in the play list toolbar to browse the play library β€” power plays, penalty kills, breakouts, rushes, and face-offs. Inside any play, open the β‹― menu and choose Load Formation… to place a standard offensive or defensive formation on the rink. Loading a formation can be undone with Undo.

Can I draw on half the ice?

Yes. Open any play, tap the β‹― menu, and choose Half Ice. Switch back with Full Ice at any time β€” your drawing is kept. Offensive zone and power play templates open on half ice; rushes and transitions use the full rink.

How do I animate a play?

Draw skating paths with the Move tool, starting each stroke right on top of a player so the animation knows who moves. Then tap Play to run the whole play, or use Step to move through it one step at a time.

How do I export a play as an image or PDF?

Open a play, tap the Share icon (↑) in the toolbar, and choose Share as Image or Share as PDF. You can AirDrop it, email it, or save it to Files.

How do I chart shots?

Open Shot Charts from the grid menu and start a new chart. Choose made or missed, then tap anywhere on the half-ice rink to place the shot. Turn on Delete Mode to remove a shot you placed by mistake.

What does the Quick Whiteboard do?

The Quick Whiteboard is a scratchpad for on-the-fly diagrams, like drawing up a set during a timeout. Nothing on it is saved. Open it from the grid menu in the top-left.

I found a bug β€” how do I report it?

Please email hello@rattlerplay.com with a description of the issue, what you were doing when it happened, and your iPad model and iPadOS version. Screenshots or screen recordings are very helpful.

Getting Started

Drawing on the rink

Pick a tool from the toolbar: the O Pen draws blue offense paths, the X Pen draws red defense paths, and Move draws green skating paths with arrowheads. Label, Screen, and Text add numbered steps, screens, and notes.

Adding players to the rink

Tap Add O or Add X to place offense and defense tokens, then drag them anywhere on the ice. To fill the rink with a whole line at once, open the β‹― menu and choose Assign Lineup….

Building a practice plan

Open Practice Plans from the grid menu and create a plan. Tap Add Item to add plays and drills in order, and set a duration for each block. When you're ready, tap Start Session β€” the live timer counts down each block and moves to the next one automatically.
